About the Artist
Justin Tubis is a singer/songwriter from San Diego, California, performing under the stage name of “Hue McMahon”. Discovering folk music at an early age, Justin is heavily influenced by its genuine lyrics and musicality to this day. He combines his old folk influence with indie pop and dream-like electronic sounds to form his own unique style. Using his deep rooted lyricism, his mission is to connect with others and to give people the knowledge that their feelings are important and shared.
Hue McMahon’s first EP, “HUE” was released in 2017. Deriving from his old folk influence, “HUE” presented covers of specific artists such as Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Joe Pug. However, the EP also mixed in blues with “Slow Rush”, soft-pop with “Shady Lady” and even psychedelic music through “Cotton Clouds and Hollow Hills”, which he ultimately formed his tagline – Going Against River Tides. Hue McMahon personifies a soft-spoken counter culture within his music, resulting in an “I feel that way too” reaction. He believes that his music can establish deep connections that will grow people’s perception and help realize that many of us feel the same at times, but do not show it.
In 2021, Hue McMahon released "Hollow Space", an indie-rock / alternative EP with an overall theme of mental health. For his second release, Hue McMahon took a quality-over-quantity approach and gave the listener a lot of hidden messages to unpack. In this release, Hue McMahon focused on the emotions that make people feel truly alive – feelings of attraction, hope, anxiety, fear, escape, mental clarity, and more. He brings out these emotions through his continuous use of ambiguous lyrics and intense sounds (also saw in his first release, “HUE”). “Hollow Space” has a satisfying balance of lyrical and musical meaning, like the seductive hooks that keep you chasing someone in “Kaleidoscopes”, or the apocalyptic, ear shredding guitar solos that catch your attention in “The End as We Know It”.
